HUGE at a Glance

This is HUGE from battlebots

HUGE is a heavyweight robot. The heavyweight class robots are all 250lbs, BattleBots is currently the only competition in the U.S. where you can fight full-combat heavyweight robots. Being limited to 250lbs means you have to get a little creative with your material choices and design.

Our HUGE wheels are made of 1in thick ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW for short). On our smaller weight classes of the robot we use UHMW entirely for the body as well. This material is light-weight, durable, and cost-effective. Our normal wheels are 40in tall, but we have used other heights and thicknesses in the past depending on our configuration. The cutouts allow us to cut out weight while maintaining strength and flexibility. Our legs are also made of 1.5in thick UHMW and they allow us to brace against the ground to move forwards, and balance HUGE enough to be able to drive.

HUGE has a large assortment of weapon bars that we swap out depending on the opponent. All of our bars weigh 30lbs and are made of AR500 steel. Our tip speed is about 220mph-250mph, but this changes based on the length of the bar.

Our body is simple in terms of design. Each half is a box and the design is fully mirrored on the other side, so each half can run independently of each other. The body is made of AR400 steel and we swap out our top plate thickness depending on the opponent. The titanium poles on the side are 1in thick and we use them to balance and to make sure we don’t get stuck on our side. They are just an extension of our drive axles. Contrary to popular belief, it isn’t a single pole through the frame! Each axle is mounted separately.

The most important feature of the robot is its giant angry eyes. They’re made out of thin aluminum and held on with a single bolt, allowing them to bounce about throughout the fights!
